    AI in search results

If you are like me, and really tired of Internet AI being shoved down your throat by search engines, a simple workaround is to type "-AI" at the end of your search phrase. Searching the term "bonsai" in Google creates a huge AI dump of information that you don't care about. "bonsai -AI" and...

What would you do with these Japanese Maple cuttings?

Back on 9/8 I was trimming an Acer p "Ryusen" that I have on my back deck, and I set up one of the small bottle propagators in my office. I have to admit to being pessimistic about potential for results (given the lateness of the season), but imagine my surprise that here we are six weeks later...

    My images are being rotated

I just got a couple of emails about this issue, and after researching it this is a known bug and it will be patched in the next software release. A possible workaround is to use the "insert image" button at the top of the editing window. Do not use the "attach files" button at the bottom of...

How to get your IP blocked...

Every now and then on this site I talk about Russian spammers. For fun, here's a good example. Should I (a) Approve (b) Spam clean (c) Reject with reason (d) Reject with extreme prejudice and block IP

Google and the open web... round #2

I am posting this on the general discussion forum because it directly impacts the future direction of this site. As you may be aware, Google, and particularly Google's ham-handed attempt to steal the Internet, is causing huge upheaval among global content creators. Google adsense ads currently...

Google AI... and this web site

I wanted to share this topic with all the members, since I am trying to manage this as best as I can... As everyone knows, this site is paid for with Google ad revenues, and I try to keep the ads as low as possible. In the last six months ad revenues have collapsed. Site traffic is up, the...

    Be still my beating heart...

Every now and then I do something with the site that scares me. Suffice it to say that Oracle (the company) is ending official support for MySQL 8.0, which was our database structure. Today I migrated our database from MySQL to MariaDB, and then had to update several versions to bring it...

    Fall equinox!

Back when I lived in SoCal, a group of us would ride up to mountains every change of seasons and toast the setting sun... or in the case of the winter solstice, we would huddle for shelter while sipping on our beers. In the spirit of my friends everywhere celebrating the Fall equinox!

    American Persimmon

Thought I'd start a thread on my journey to try to locate a decent female American Persimmon. I went from assuming that we didn't have any on our property to eventually locating three females and quite a few males. Very hard to capture pictures because the females are large trees - which is...

A visit to Mr Maple - Flat Rock, NC

I know many of you have purchased trees online from MrMaple.com. Today was their Labor Day Open House, and I was there to check out their trees, snap photos, and say "hi" to a few friends. Here are some pics: UTV's were available to drive people around the extensive grounds. I think there...

Miracle Grow causing second flowering in Princess Persimmons

I wanted to share this info for all the princess persimmon lovers out there. All of my princess persimmons are experiencing a second flowering this year... including some that have never flowered before (including this spring) but have taken it upon themselves to flower now. Because I have so...

    River birch yamadori

I thought I'd start a new thread on this tree, which I am excited about for the future... We live on a lake, and at some point someone chainsawed down this river birch (Betula nigra) which was growing on the shoreline. At some times during the year, when there was a lot of rainfall and the...

    Milorganite and deer...

Chalking this one up to "try it and find out". I was talking to a contractor on another project, and the conversation swung around to landscaping... and problems we have been having with deer - particularly low bushes like azaleas. The guy swore by a fertilizer called "Milorganite" which is...

Unsafe at any speed... Fiskar multi-purpose "garden snips"

In 50 years of keeping bonsai, I have never before tossed a tool in the trash because I considered it dangerous. These tools claim the award of being first! I purchased these as gardening pruning shears to be used like any other pruning shears - and sliced my hand open the first time I went to...

    Tropical nights?

Anyone else having long spells of tropical nights? (any night that doesn't get 68 F / 20 C or lower?) We haven't had a single night that has cooled to our average low (or lower) since June 3. That's 35 straight nights... and counting... of above average nighttime temps :(

Appeldoorn Landscape Nursery Closing Sale, Bostaic North Carolina (outside Asheville)

I have been seeing a lot of oblique references to this information in the Charlotte and Blue Ridge Bonsai Society groups, but I wanted to make sure that I publicize this to as broad an audience as possible. Bruce Appledoorn is closing his nursery and "retiring" from the retail trade, though he...

    Name the pest...

What insect pest causes this damage on red leaf Japanese maples? It only happened in a short window a couple of weeks ago... no damage before or since. Almost looked as if there was an insect hatch or swarm... and that whatever caused the damage is now gone.
