    African coral tree

Erythrina lysistemon Beautiful when in flower. I've grown the 1st one from a seed and the other 2 from cuttings subsequently. I'm still learning through trial and error what works and not with it. They are a bit of a challenge for bonsai...especially in this colder and wet winter climate, but...

    Healing...

I'm looking at this poor bonsai, thinking....they're actually just like us people. All have their scars. Some have way more healing to do than others though....🤪

    About thickening a primary branch...

I remember a talk here some time ago about the fastest way to thickening a branch...can't remember the concenses though. The two "methods" were... 1. Leaving all growth on the branch, and let it grow wild in all directions. 2. Removing all side growth and let the single branch shoot as long...

Moisture level under the trunk...and roots.

It might seem like i'm over thinking this, but its something to think about....I think :p Up to now i've exclusive used deeper pots...commercial and plastic bonsai pots as well as other containers. This year (with the repot) i've started using some proper shallow pots, for the first time...

Looking for ideas to thicken Chinese elm trunk bottom.

I've been growing this from a stick in a pot....some 15 yrs. Its coming on nicely lately...but it has a major flaw. Above the nebari, the trunk is "flat". I obviously should've paid better attention when it was growing in the ground...but that's spilled milk now. Any ideas as to how to correct...

    Under the moss

I thought i'll share with you an interesting observation I made.... I'm repotting atm. This is a Trident that was potted last spring...the moss was left to grow rampant over winter...I usually take it off. To start off...this is what the surface always looks always like at repot. This is the...

    Pots on a budget...

Haha, I walked past this serving dish in a second hand shop....and a thought came to me. I can maybe make a bonsai pot from this....🧐 Drilled some holes and glued on "feet". They're pink pumice balls I got from the bead shop...where all the cool kids hang out....😁 I'm happy with the pot...the...

    Ginko help plz...

I'm not fimiliar with Ginko, so I thought i'll reach out with some questions. This one has been in a HUGE garden pot for a long time. A year ago I smashed the pot to get it out. Sawed off and removed all the soil and big roots. Planted it in bonsai mix and it bounced back really well. Now its...

    Swamp cypress carving...?

Back story....I received this tree about 10 years ago. Had it in the ground for some time to...hoping for proper taper and nebari. It didn't really turn out that way...it grew into a large pole. I lifted it, chopped the trunk and started building a flat top. I did some initial carving...but...

    Pear air layer...

Man, this worked way better than expected. I did a layer on a pear tree I planted some time ago...exactly a year ago this week. I mixed up 50/50 perlite/vermiculite, and used that as the air layer medium....as an experiment. I topped it with a 1/2 inch layer of sphagnum to keep the moisture...

    Big Pohutukawa kermadecensis

Variegated Pohutukawa...native to the Kermadec islands. I've had this tree since a stick in a pot...some 15 years. Initially trained it for bonsai, then just planted it into a big terracotta garden pot. I let the roots escape into the ground and decided to leave it as a house potted plant...

    Azalea...nutrient deficient...?

It has been growing strong all season (its autumn now), but the last few weeks its been yellowing....and the growth is stunted. I can only think its a nutrient deficiency...? Any ideas anybody? Soil is 70/30 mix of bonsai/ ericaceous potting soil. Its "Conversation piece"....a Robin Hill hybrid.

    Copper beech...green leaves.

I find this fascinating. Its the start of autumn now. My two Copper beeches both had their red leaves all summer, but today I saw their leaves are green....for the most part. Do they naturally do that? This is the first year I have noticed that. Now i'm on the wonder if I just did not pay...

    The myth of 10:10:10 fertilizer.

Maybe not that applicable to bonsai....but still worth knowing I think. Yeah we flush regularly, but seems to me it don't give the trees what they really need. I first heard of the 3:1:2 ratio that plants takes up nutrients, some 10 years ago....and still choose my fertilizer as close to that I...

    Where is the graft...?

I recently bought this Acer mikawa. I'm a bit confused as to where it was grafted. The plan is to layer it to shorten the trunk some...but I need to be sure where the graft is first.

    My old rose..

Its about 30yrs old. I dug it up 8yrs ago and had to cut off some real think side trunks. Currently its about 300mm high and the trunk diameter is 160mm (at the thickest side). What is interesting about it, is I never sealed the wood when I removed the excess growth. It started rotting...

    Acer katsura...layer or carve?

I'll give you the whole back story... I bought this tree some years ago and planted it in the garden. After a year I removed it as the wind here is way to destructive for its delicate leaves. I trimmed the roots and put it in a container. I didn't really know what to do with it...TBH. Here it...
