Pine rosin as an additive for JBP?

Left field question and could be a horrible idea, but could some pine rosin, applied like a fertilizer tablet, be good for JBP? I was weeding and cleaning up the surface on some of my JBP, and I noticed an abundance of mycorrhizae, right where some pine needles are decomposing. I mulched some...

    Baby corker, rough graft

Pinus thunbergii Gan Seki Sho from Brent. I received past Spring and buried it deeper, up next to the graft, with a prayer for an eventual ground layer. I did a cutback a couple weeks later than decandling time around here, but continued w full strength fert. I think it worked out well to set...

    6 itoigawa cuttings

Sourced from @Nybonsai12 in the Summer of ‘24. I haven’t moved them out of the trey they came in yet. I was thinking I’d move three into pots and three into pond baskets. The winters are real mild here, so I was planning on doing this soon. For the pond baskets I was going to use turface and...

    Decandling and sacrifice branches

I have some decandling to do a week or so behind schedule. I was debating cutting off nearly all of the sacrifices and starting over with new sacrifices in order to minimize scarring and to slow down the trees a bit. Do you think I should do while I decandle? Or, save it for cooler winter work...

Picked up some new “vases” in Sao Paulo.

These pots are from Sergio Onodera. He was kind enough to schedule me in to peruse his workshop and inventory. I love the texture of the one on the right, but not sure what is going to go in there. Maybe a ginkgo? Although, I am not sure how well the ginkgo are adapting to the coolish SC...

    MFP’s 2-3 year cmeg JBP

just a few @cmeg1 JBP I’m working with. The smaller ones are younger, but I also withheld fertilizer and did some early season decandling. I want to work one or more of the small ones into a mame or shohin formal upright, if possible. So I have been trying to keep things small, but will run out...

    Shimpaku seasonal activities?

I repotted the one on the right this past spring and recently did some clean up pruning. I started by thinning branches that had back buds, but figured I’d let some more sun in by thinning out the top section over the past couple weeks. I was wondering if I should be saving the cutbacks until...

    Yankadori elm 2006ish

This “yankadori” (technical term for material removed from parking tie or similar circumstance) was one of my first bonsai when I moved to the DC area. I believe it is Siberian elm, could be American. It is courser than my other “volunteer” elms. When it was young I tourniqueted the roots...

    Scale on elm

I haven’t seen a white scale like this, or maybe it is something else. Bayer 3-1, knock it back, but didn’t take it out. I was thinking a soap and oil mix to scrub w a tooth brush and then reapply the 3-1?

    Overwatering JBP?

I just got a new watering system setup ahead of a summer vacation in a couple months. I noticed some browning from the tips of the needles across my JBP. I have done some needle cutting, but this is different in that I can still see the needle points on the brown needles. I think I am ok as...

Is there a proper time to whack a Pinus?

most if not all of this material is from @cmeg1 . I was thinking of chopping some back this year.. maybe decandle time would be a good time? I could decandle some while setting aside sacrifice branches? I know it slows them down a lot, but no better time to start working on design while they are...

    Braided benjamina air-layer

I am surprised I don’t have a thread for this somewhere, but it must have been back on the IBC. This was an early airlayer attempt by be in ~2005 or so. And, is well overdue a repot. It has always been a bit of an ugly duckling and probably always will be. “Mother” tree is in the background.

Don’t go to Champion Nursery in S.C., off of 707

I moved to S.C. over the summer and was quite excited to check out a nursery just down the road from me. I browsed for a while and came back to a honey suckle looking plant that I was thinking on, but didn’t get a chance to ask what species it was. I looked at a few azelea that were up on a...

Any idea where these cutters are from?

My brother in law was commenting on how perfect the wire cutters were at 180mm and I always gravitate back to the branch cutters. Any idea where I could get some more tools like these?

Emergency repot on a little Mikawa

The wind took this one off the bench and broke the pot. It is probably just as well, so I can give it a little more room to run. I was impressed by the microrizae (sp?) or fuzzy white stuff in the roots. I’ve never really witnessed that before in my trees, though I have only had a few JBP.

    Pre fab bench

Does anyone know a good value on decent looking prefabricated bench for my trees? I just moved to a community in S.C. with an HOA and I don’t want to start setting off complaints. Eventually I wouldn’t rule out building something, but looking for a quick fix during the chaos of un-packing...

    Anyone know their ants?

Does anyone overwinter on the bench?

I.e. not overwinter? I’m sure it is species specific. But, I overwinter on the ground and have mulched with leaves, but my maples got hit with some fungal issues, so last season I didn’t use leaves. My Chinese junipers always come out worse for wear in the spring, leaves or no, I think because...

    Tsuga c. literati?

I found a nursery with some hemlock at reasonable prices, but they weren’t in the best health and not a lot (almost 0) of interior growth. This one has a couple children trees unless they come from the same roots under the soil, so likely 3 for $60. I always enjoyed the literati style but never...

    New Yixing pot

I received this pot in the mail today. It was a present from my wife for our 10th anniversary. I find it beautiful, but I was wondering if it is really “unglazed” or maybe slip glazed? I like it either way and have been dreaming of getting a hemlock into this style pot for a while now. I think...

Three new subjects but looking for an affordable nursery of landscaping stock

I went to a local nursery that had some very nice material, but they seemed to specialize in slow growing cultivars that were very pricey for my budget. I did pick up a few and will go back some time when I have more time to peruse. The white pine could be real nice. But, what I really want...

    Sick Junipers

All three of my junipers are looking rough this season. The Blau usually looks pretty bad coming out of winter but then has put on some healthy growth by now. I’m hoping I didn’t spread some fungus to the other two. The procumbans was cut back this spring and the Kishu was repotted. All are...

    Good repotting videos

it is difficult parsing YouTube’s offerings for decent repotting video’s. If you have any links, please share. Please no “spaghnum only” types. I know there are plenty of videos of how not to repot. Specifically, I am gathering courage to repot my eastern hemlock in the Spring, and want to move...
