    Another BIG American Hornbeam thread.

I have read this too, and I tend to follow it in regards to straight sections of branch. Occasionally I may opt for a bend instead if possible. On feature branches, as I think your first left one is, I tend to leave them a little longer and I think the guideline applies less to those feature...

    Chinese Elm Leaves Turning early

It does indeed look like blackspot fungus. Not wetting the leaves at watering will also help to reduce it. I have overcome it with removal of infected leaves and a Lime sulphur wash. Fungicide sprays will work too.

    2026 contest ideas?

If it was laying on its side yes, but that isnt the case. This one would be fine imho. This is a good video, for anyone that doesn't fully understand what a raft is

    Yamadori Spruce

Ive viewed this one on FB many times. The deadwood work has aged well and is really good, because in reality it doesnt look like there was a second trunk there, it looks like one main trunk that became split, over time. Think thats what the poster above was getting at. Great tree!

    Fall collecting

Its not a new concept. https://bonsai4me.com/collecting-deciduous-trees-for-bonsai-in-autumn-fall/ Im not a collector myself, but have transferred/repotted many nursery trees, mainly native deciduous, during this period: The bare root period is the dormant season, typically from November to...

    Korean Hornbeam - First Tree

My first tree was a Carmona, that I kept inside, so you're doing way better than I did for my first tree!:D

    Merriggioli “mighty trunk” - confused

Most wouldnt cut back their trees as hard as in the video, in any season. Sometimes you gotta take a few steps back, to make one step forward.

    Hornbeam No.11 progression

Are you creating a hollow on the Tree, Maros? I noticed the scar when you shared it on FB and I know its not like you to create this type of feature intentionally, so my first thought was something prompted you to do this, maybe an imperfection in the bark or some type of injury. If you do...

Then you could just keep it at nursery material, pricepoint under a 100, show a receipt for entry. I also like the raft idea.

    Japanese Maple

Pretty sure the base has thickened, since ive been allowing the stems to grow unrestricted all season. Recently cut back the low left branch and selected a stem moving upwards as want to raise the canopy and let the first left branch develop into a subtrunk.

Bravo! Youre doing a great job with it!

    Merriggioli “mighty trunk” - confused

The material looks like a good fit for this approach.

    Pretty impressive

These Hackberries and Tridents have mostly been developed in the ground, 15 to 20 years from seed. Some real stonkers here

What should a hornbeam look like?

European Hornbeam primary branches tend to be up n out, the secondaries will often dip to horizontal, tertiary branches curling up to the light. You can likewise find secondary limbs rising up. You will get some primary branches that might emerge from the trunk more horizontal than upwards too...

    Is this trident worth it?

Yes its where a root was cut back, the high root can be seen in one of the pics. Removed because a high root would look ugly on this tree. Yes I preferred the tree at a slight different angle, which highlights its subtle taper and sinuous trunk line.

    The end of spring repotting?

I did two Beeches at the back end of Aug. Doesn't look like they even noticed. https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/fagus-sylvatica-tree.60825/post-1204441

Thoughts on Today's Bonsai Mirai Tree Sale?

Agree there. Not my cup of tea either, but it will definitely appeal to the masses, even down to the exposed roots, somebody will love the roots.

Thoughts on Today's Bonsai Mirai Tree Sale?

I had the same feeling when I first saw it in my FB feed. Looks like it was plucked from the wild. The Juniper too is great. I like them with this wild look. Probably the last we'll see of the Linden. Bar Mach5 i've never seen anyone on here purchase a deciduous tree from the Mirai auction.

What are your thoughts on pond baskets?

Op was asking about shallow boxes and trunk development. Check out some of @clem Maple development threads. I dont use pond baskets anymore, they tend to dry out very quickly on my balcony where it can get very sunny (south facing) and a little breezy. I love the look of Anderson flats, dont...
