What is too much to pay for a tree?

It’s all relative. There are $50 trees that are overpriced, and $50,000 trees that are a “good deal”. But, here is a good rule of thumb on whether a tree is too expensive: if it costs $1.00 more than the amount of cash you’d be willing to walk outside and set on fire…it’s too expensive.😂

    Air layering and wet moss

I punch holes in the bag, and if it still fills with water, I’ll gently squeeze it out.

Help! Leaves drying after deshojo air layering harvest.

It appears you separated it too early. I don’t separate layers until the roots really fill the bag and have turned from white to brown in color. Keep the soil from drying and watch for some new buds to swell in a week or two. You might get lucky.

What to do with this trident maple in development?

Guessing nothing in those photos will be part of the actual bonsai. Let’s see the trunk where it touches the ground.

    Anything worth collecting here?

@Bonsai Nut isn't the “red” in ERC a reference to the wood color? I agree on the naming…we should start a campaign to rename these trash trees.

Help me pick my first Ginseng Ficus. Pic included.

Is a ginseng ficus what you really want, or just what you’re choosing from? Lots of folks show up here with one of these eventually wanting to layer off the tubers in favor of the scion cultivar. They are a novelty and not typically long-term bonsai material. I’d suggest finding a F...

    Stewartia Health

Reading your post, it sounds like too much of everything…too much sun, too much water, too much fert, too much fungicide. Even though they grow pretty aggressively, my Stewartia doesn’t seem to need full sun or heavy feed. It will dry out fairly quickly, but I have no idea how your soil...

Yatsubusa elm from evergreen garden works. Some ideas to consider.

Love the simplicity of this composition, really nice.

    Considering Quitting Bonsai...

If you haven’t thought about quitting bonsai, you ain’t doing bonsai. Rub some dirt on it and get back in there😂…using species that do well where you live. DAS are not good, JBP are not easy beginner trees, but elms, maples and Shimpaku junipers are typically forgiving.

    Decandling and sacrifice branches

I’d be likely to wait to remove the sacrifice branches until Spring. Candle-cutting plus removing sacrifice branches might throw off the water uptake and cause some root issues if watering is a bit heavy. Really nice development of that bigger one, and with this much time invested, what’s...

    Rotating trees

Not nearly enough…I do have benches facing in 4 different directions so I can move them around, still see the front while exposing them to different angles of sun.

    Cool tree, lots of potential.

    JWP yellowing

This year’s growth looks fine, last year’s needles are looking tired, so if it was mine, I wouldn’t be too concerned. I am watching my JWP closely this year as I think the roots got too hot last summer and it resulted in some burning of needles; which looks similar to yours. I’m keeping it in...

    Korean Hornbeam

If it was mine, I’d probably put it in the ground for a few years to grow a second section of trunk and see if the chop will callus over. KH are very slow to bulk up and close wounds, so while I can’t tell the scale from the photos, that chop is going to take years to close. Might as well use...

What to do with this Trident Maple

Candle cutting, before and after. Left that first branch mostly alone one more year to extend. By fall work, it should have plenty to wire out.

Thanks for your purchase, appreciate it! I have been cutting all at once over the last few years now because the tree is very well balanced.

    Peter Warren Japanese Black Pine

Candle-cutting yesterday. I left the lower branches mostly alone again this year to help extend and strengthen them. This one is going to need about 2 days of work (at my pace) this winter to prune and wire it out.
