What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

Salix purchased this winter. This is a tree I have admired every winter for the last few years. Where I rent space for my trees over winter, this was always captivating me. I never knew who was the owner, but this year it was available to purchase. It became my birthday present from my family. I...

Alternatives to Ume especially for Northern Growers.

I would suggest prunus tomentosa. They seem to bulk up fast, and they are prolific bloomers.

    Cork elm

Really nice Michael. How tall is this one? I have a few different cork elms in development, and can't get over just how vigourous they are.

Rmj, how much tree to use?

Glad to hear all your trees are healthy, and that you had a good family summer. I was at a bonsai get together in August, and mentioned how as hobbyists we have to accept that life will get in the way of bonsai work. Like you said, trees are healthy, so no serious stress.

    Big thuja.

You can definetly remove those high roots, they are not a part of the true root system. As you mentioned, thuja put out roots in any collection of damp material. The root flare is clearly the lower section, and where this tree starts.

    Pieris 'passion' blooming

@Hartinez I do still have it, and it still seems to be an easy one to care for. I have it potted similar to what I remember John G. using for his azaleas in development. I have it in a peat and perlite mix, and I prune after the blooms. I don't think I have ever cut it back as hard as an...

I hope things take a turn for the better. Such a shame to see pillars of the community just disappear.

    small pinus parvifolia

It really was great to actually "be allowed" to share our trees with the public. Everyone was clearly overjoyed to be out, and socializing. The last year and a half have been terrible.

    Catastrophic Losses This Year

Sorry for your loss Josh, brutal to lose yer best bud. The pines look similar to what @Adair M was battling with recently.

Progress bulking up what was a stick in the pot bald cypress, not bad for the Great white north.

    small pinus parvifolia

This one was also shared in my local club show this summer. The organization of the show was a little tricky, as we still have some difficult rules related to covid.
