    Most common beginner mistakes

Over watering. Under watering. Both in turn. Getting bored and forgetting to care for the tree. Purchasing weak trees and then attempting to work them before recovery. I’ve made all of these mistakes, and I know people who’ve been doing bonsai a long time who still make them.

Winter Bonsai 2024, Kannapolis, NC (outside of Charlotte) December 7 & 8, 2024

I also bit my tongue through a good portion of this thread. It saddens me really. There is so much about the American bonsai scene to be proud of, but it seems much of the judging is still highly influenced by bias and favoritism. This is an absolute stunning venue full of many great trees. I...

    Analyzing PBE 2024 Judging Data

That was Michael Hagedorn’s entry in the 2022 Expo. This year was a shohin juniper on metal arches. Nao, I’d be interested in seeing the judges reactions to Michael’s display if you have it.

    The Shohin Tree Thread

Does anyone know if Martin Sweeney is still around? Here's a fun little Arakawa cutting that I purchased from Martin here, for my first mentor Phil Atkerson, back in October of 2013. Phil passed away in 2021 but gave the tree back to me before he was unable to care for it. Acer palmatum...

Nishiki gawa never developed rough bark

After 9 years, I'll be amazed if any nursery would replace a tree.

Nishiki gawa never developed rough bark

I agree with the others; Nishiki gawa is one that is known to develop rough bark faster than others like Arakawa. It must have been a miss-labeled tree. Unfortunately that happens often enough. Still a beautiful tree though! I wonder, could the original graft have died and this is the...

Your Noel looks great! Looks like it's doing its own roots too! Mine is quite small, so no layers yet.

    Japanese Maple development

Apparently that took me a while to type up. I do like the added movement here, and the base is better than I thought. You may be able to get by with a few root grafts rather than layering.

    Japanese Maple development

Hi Davide, There's nothing wrong with having a tall maple like this. I think the structure looks nice enough to continue on with a taller tree if you want. Of course, if you prefer it to be shorter that's certainly an option as well. Personally, what I would do to continue developing this tree...

    SHISHIGASHIRA GROUP PLANTING

Love it Sergio!! Such a beautiful composition. Shishigarhira is special, especially in spring. Some maple lovers don't seem to like it, but I don't think they have any.. lol. I didn't really understand the appeal until I got one. Now I have several.

It's beautiful! But I've never seen Shihigashira with spring color like that. How certain are you that it's Shihigashira?

    Creating Maple Nebari

I'll bet he's mostly talking about the fine roots. It's the fine roots that really fuse well, but once your getting some primary root formation, that's where you might want to make sure nothing is too out of place. This channel has some great content on nebari formation:

Mine is from Conifer Kingdom. We'll have to see if they are even the same Akaji nishiki... 😂 I don't know if it's exactly the same as Seigen, but they are definitely similar. I'm still not entirely sure what the true Seigen looks like here in the States.

I don't have Murakumo. Another one for the list..? lol The Peve Multicolor just came, so that's not a reflection of my climate. But the other maples are all kept in my garage over winter with temps usually between 30 to 40F. The bonsai shuffle begins when buds start breaking; then I'm giving...
