One of these Seigens is not like the other...

You bring up a good point. I also agree, and disagree. If we're judging a fine Japanese maple bonsai in competition (ideally out of leaf), then the cultivar should play no part at all. Unless perhaps two trees are tied, being of the exact same quality, but one is known to be a harder cultivar...

One of these Seigens is not like the other...

I have had four different "Seigen's" here in the US as well, and so far none are quite the same. It's possible that my Mr. Maple and Maplestone varieties will come out very similar though. I also find it interesting that my Seigen, Wilson's Pink Dwarf, and Bonfire from Maplestone Ornamentals...

    Shin Deshojo from nursery

Fun tree! I love Shin deshojo, and it looks like you got a good graft. Not too much for input at this point, but I like the movement you've put into it so far, and good move letting it develop in a larger container rather than going straight to a bonsai pot. I say keep letting it develop and...

    Arakawa Japanese Maple

I have to say, Bonsai Nut, I do think there is value in discussing possibilities like this for those starting from a much earlier stage of development. But in this case I think attempting to pick out little things like that and make drastic changes would only result in drastically lowering the...

    32 year old Acer Rubrum

Cutting Grown Orange Leaf Japanese Maples For Sale

Will do. I'm sure they would put it into their evaluation system. They evaluate anything new like that next to the five closest cultivars over a number of years to see if it differs enough to justify entry as a new cultivar (in their opinion of course). But it makes sense to me. Even if they...

Cutting Grown Orange Leaf Japanese Maples For Sale

I like it! 'Piedmont Orange' is the first that came to mind. I think 'Tang' would be a pretty cool name for an orange cultivar as well. I don't really know the process either, but I know the Mr. Maple guys would probably be happy to help you out. You're probably not too far from them either...

Cutting Grown Orange Leaf Japanese Maples For Sale

Are you thinking about introducing this as a registered cultivar down the road? I'm happy to compare it to some of my others and pass along any thoughts or observations if you consider it. I have Marmalade, and a few others that can be orange in the spring, but none that go purple/maroon in the...

Starting Japanese Maple hardwood cuttings indoors

It really varied for me; some showed growth within a couple of weeks, while others took over a month. They will start to shrivel and maybe even turn black if they fail. If the stem still looks healthy then just wait to see what happens.

Starting Japanese Maple hardwood cuttings indoors

The lighting in a window isn't necessarily ideal, but I have done it. Deshojo and Katsura are both strong cultivars that historically root well. There's no reason you can't try it. I placed mine in a big South facing window from December until April/May. The transition outdoors is one major...

Japanese Maples that Root from Cuttings

@Ohmy222 I don't have much experience with the red leaf cultivars, but I've hear much the same from other sources. However, my Pixie cutting from Brent at Evergreen Garden Works surprised me with how strong it grew and thickened this year. Pixie might be a good option for someone looking for a...

Japanese Maples that Root from Cuttings

That's awesome! I had bought a small grafted tree to try early last year based on the vigor and small leaves. Mine is still quite small though so I haven't tired taking cuttings yet. I saw your post on instagram too. I'm excited to try this one!

Japanese Maples that Root from Cuttings

It was just one tiny little after thought cutting that I stuck because it was there last winter/spring. I hear they root well, and I really think this one is slow just because it's so small and it wasn't really intentionally timed or anything. I just listed it because I know that it did root...

Japanese Maples that Root from Cuttings

Checking in here. This thread is three years old now, and I'm fairly certain many of you started this work long before that. I would be very curious and forever grateful to hear from you all on how the various cultivars have performed on their own roots. Which cultivars are strongest? Which...

Naming Laceleaf X Arakawa Japanese Maple

This is awesome Jelle! On top of my bonsai and yamadori passion, I’m also quite the maple fanatic. I may or may not have around 115 different Palmatum cultivars that I’m testing out for bonsai and/or simply collecting… 🙄🤣 I like a few of the names so far, but really “Jelle’s Cork Bark” or...
