Thank you! It is. I hit him up with the idea a couple years ago and Austin designed and built it for me. 🙂

One of these Seigens is not like the other...

Thank you 🙂 Do you have any idea why they would choose to describe this tree specifically as Red/Beni seigen rather than simply Seigen as they do with all of the others? Different known cultivar? Unique traits of this particular Seigen?

One of these Seigens is not like the other...

Thank you for checking with your friend. 🙂 Yeah, I’ve known that “Beni” means red. What I think we need is a Japanese bonsai/maple expert, to figure out why they chose to describe this as Red seigen as opposed to just Seigen. 🤷🏼

One of these Seigens is not like the other...

I wondered the same, but I kind of doubt it. There are many Seigen’s in the Kokufu before and after this; even in the same album. Yes, leaves would be wonderful to see. 😂

One of these Seigens is not like the other...

Here’s one just to add to the fun of this thread. In all of the years of Kokufu dating back to Kokufu 37 in 1963, I’ve seen all of ONE tree listed as the cultivar ‘Beni seigen’. And Vertrees book mentions that ‘Corallinum’ is sometimes called ‘Beni seigen’. Other than these two places I haven’t...

There are also trees listed as ‘Beni seigen’, so it can get rather confusing. I do see now where it looks like you made up a name for the one that you have, and shortened it to b-seigen.

I’m sorry if I missed an explanation earlier in this thread, but what is a b-Seigen? Is that short for something else?

Show me your (Shishi) and I'll show you my (Lions Head)

And…. There are a lot of amazing examples on the @kokufu_maples page on IG. 😉 Shishigashira is a favorite in Japan, at least judging by how often it shows up in the Kokufu. I’d say it’s one of, if not the most shown cultivar.

I wonder if a non-broom style Zelkova has ever been shown at Kokufu.. . 🧐

Love this one! I’m pretty sure that I have it saved on Instagram. Do you happen to follow @kokufu_maples ? Quite a few nice Seigen’s on there; they just don’t show the leaves of course.

Best red Japanese maple besides desojo?

I was also going to mention Pixie. Mine is a cutting from Evergreen Garden Works, it’s been quite strong with reasonable internode length so far. I generally lean toward the green cultivars with great spring color, but it’s been nice to have the maroon and red foliage for a bit of a break from...

    Frustration with market

This is the place for nice field grown maples at a great price. You have to follow close and then jump on it when you see one you like though. They go fast! That said, there are at least a couple of maples left as of this posting. https://cedarrosenursery.com/collections/deciduous-field-grown-bonsai

    Kiyohime maple

I agree with Mike. Up potting it now could actually even slow it down. Spring as the buds are pushing is always the best time to re-pot and work the roots.
