    Nova bonsai garden

Looks like a great place to work on trees, Scott!

    Chop mark ID please

What maker was the pot attributed to? The glaze texture looks like Shuho, but I have only seen it in white/off white, and the chop doesn’t match.

    Chop mark ID please

Here are a few resources in case you don’t have them. I tracked through them and didn’t see your chop. There is an active Facebook Pots ID group that you can try too. http://www.tokoname.or.jp/bonsai/catalog/maker-e.htm https://japanesebonsaipots.net/ Happy hunting.

    Tommy Lee LOVES bonsai

Me too. As a drummer in rock cover bands in the 80s and 90s, he was definitely a hero. I missed him by only a few days when Bob P brought him to Bjorn’s place last year. In a way, I’m almost glad I didn’t meet him, but it would have been cool to work on trees with the guy.

Slight yellowing of internal foliage/stems on Shimpaku

Shedding old growth is common this time of year.

    Confirming Variety Of Satsuiki

You weren’t kidding about the lace bug. Those leaves are eaten up pretty bad. Hopefully you get it under control and don’t allow them to spread. They can be persistent. Here is my Kinsai from a few years ago showing some of the reverted flowers for comparison...

    Confirming Variety Of Satsuiki

Does it have any of the narrow flower petals? Kinsai will revert to its mother(?) flower, which looks like yours. You have to prune those branches off to preserve the desirable thin-petaled flowering branches. Kinsai bark will take a reddish hue in late winter as well as an indicator...

    Shimpaku

All shimpaku are botanically J. chinensis, but not all J. chinensis are Shimpaku. Shimpaku is a specific variety of J. chinensis originally found in Japan, which has been propagated through cuttings and layerings and grafting because its growth traits and culture are very favorable to bonsai...

    Shohin display

Absolutely you can, especially with a tree with this much presence. Try to place it among other small trees so it doesn’t get “lost” in the exhibition.

Can’t decide which one to buy

In fairness to Brent, he is a “one man band” working his nursery and it takes a few days to get a response, but you will. You’ll likely find something at the MABS vendor area at a good price to select in person. Meanwhile, go get a job and stack some cash so you’re ready when the show hits.😂

    Bonsai Nursery Rant (no names)

If they looked nice for a few weeks, then declined…it may not be entirely the nursery to blame. Bonsai can be very challenging.

Can’t decide which one to buy

Brent’s stuff is very good, and it helps to ask him for a few more photos before you buy because one shot is hard to evaluate. I agree on image 8110 and 8107 as the best. In terms of “value” in bonsai, you are buying time and relying on the grower to have used that time to make a good base...

Fine, still haven’t done anything with it.

Advice for the direction of this maple please

Agreed, it is a nice little maple. Given the time of year, the only work I would do is make sure that this year’s growth (new shoots) is reduced to a single pair of leaves. It looks pretty sparse already, so I probably would not do a 50% defoliation.

    Shimpaku

The texture of the foliage doesn’t look like Shimpaku to me.

    Field Grown JBP

Which is gross and definitely works. I now use olive oil, which works very well.

Good sources for display jitas? (thin wood slabs for display)

Yes, high-fired, good pots. I have a few of his from years ago.

    JBP - refine or not?

Maybe 10-12 pairs, but you’re on the right track.

Good sources for display jitas? (thin wood slabs for display)

I have a bunch from Dave Lowman: https://bonsaitrees.com/gallery.php?id=4 He does a good job finishing and has interesting wood selections.

    JBP - refine or not?

I would decandle everything but the lowest branch. Timing depends on location; count backwards 100 days from your area’s first frost date and that’s about when you would decandle. At the same time, if you have remaining shoots that appear denser, go ahead and pull some needles to make the...
