What did you do today? Show us Pic Required

This summer I purchased 4 separate koto hime cuttings from the same eBay seller. 1 was purchased in June, died (see pic) so I bought 3 more in august to try and figure out where I went wrong. Made sure I was on top of my watering but these 3 seem to be going down the same path to an early grave. I think the organic soil they came in was just holding too much water. I have been holding off on repotting these but I don’t really have a choice, just did a quick repot into an inorganic mix. Roots look better than I expected. In the future I’ll probably try to source this variety from better sellers, I have been spending all year buying a wide variety of plants from random eBay/etsy vendors (some recommended on BN and others not).

Will these survive? Stat tuned!

Goodness! Prayers for a speedy recovery after surgery! Perhaps a cane with a shovel point…
lol! And a little basket to hang on my wheel chair. Probably need to stick with seedings I can carry.

Surgery is scheduled for next Wednesday. Plates, pins and screws. I’m getting the full treatment. Ortho Doc says the alignment x-rays look good, so after surgery should be back to full up in a month or so. Then the physical therapy starts. Have to give a good shout out to all my golfing buds down in Florida keeping all my plants and trees alive and not under watered or over watered with our seasonal thunderstorm down pours. They are not plant people, but they are doing great. Gotta love great friends.

Not bad. Saw a 15’ Trident down the street while out with the kids walking the dog. I was riding, they were walking. Neighbor might not like it if his tree up and disappeared. I think to get that look in your picture I need to grow my face hair a bit. Get that grizzly fellow look.

If you are going for small starter plants you might check out Woodlanders. I’ve purchased from their nursery for both landscaping and recently for some bonsai projects. Their plants are often “ rare”. They come with the root balls wrapped in plastic with rubber bands to hold them. The bushes and trees are laid flat between layers of newspaper. I have an order coming and will take photos. Here is a styrax japonicus from my last order. I potted it the day it arrived. It is at least 25 inches tall and note shoots close to the base.

Besides doing some canning today, I watered the bonsai pots and made photos of one grafted maple tree I want to research. It is a Tamukeyama Japanese maple acer palmatum var dissactum ‘Tamuke Yama’. The foliage is really interesting. The graft is at the top of a slender trunk. I think I will attempt to air root the graft in the spring and see if I can get the root stock to back bud.

Like the tree thread, a pic required w/each post. Just for fun.
I thought it would be a fun thread for everyone to post what the did today regarding their Bonsai collection, along the lines of the tree thread where a pic is required or it didn't happen w/your post. Before and after even better but not required.
Show us what you did with your bonsai today.
My "bonsai" related activities were mostly just thinking about preparation for winter stowage. But I also have ones i bring indoors. This podocarpus is older than you might think. Never grew until i brought it in. Then a year later it was over 3ft tall. Seems to have slowed down again. Haven't a clue no overall strategy but I removed most of the new growth.

Thank you for recommending Woodlanders. Ordered me some styrax...

Counted more nuts than leaves on this black walnut at work 🙂

I read that black Walnut trees will kill other trees around it by putting chemicals in the ground to destoy competing trees around it. That one looks like it has lots of neighbors. Is it just certain trees that are affected by it?

I am not sure. I read about it too, but I see them grow everywhere in the thickets and they don't seem to bother their neighbors. Maybe, just compatible species grow around them?

For sure. I wanted to try one, but a lot of the littles trees I have, is says they are susceptible to the, I believe it’s called juglone, the black walnut puts in the ground. Just decided it was safer to not try one.

Today I alphabetically organized my seeds that have arrived and sorted out the tree and shrub seeds to begin stratification.
Then I unpacked my order from Woodlanders that arrived. These trees and shrubs will be potted or planted in a raised garden bed on sheet metal to begin training their roots. They got a drink of water after I trimmed the plastic bag. The two cryptomeria japonicas were in nursery pots.
The plant list is what I ordered and photos once unpacked. I took an over head shot to show that only one tree was slightly flattened, but it will soon recover.
