Is the general consensus that this branch structuring is the best way to go? Is this the correct structure for both deciduous and coniferous material?

From what I have seen continued doubling of sprouts is pretty normal. However in process of sustainable development some of these will eventually be removed/shortened or thinned because of continued increase in size of tree if this continues very many years. There are also added branches at odd locations and added movement in branches causing crowding here and there. It is a general but not hard and fast rule to obey slavishly. 😌

Having the branch divide early with smaller side branches is important for later maintenance. We cannot stop the trees from growing. We may be able to limit extension to 1/2 inch each year but over 10 years the branches have all grown 2" longer. At some stage the branches need to be shortened. The second structure Tien shows allows us to reduce the branch when it gets too long by chopping part and using one of the smaller side shoots to replace it.
We do the same thing with the height of the main trunk, occasionally cutting back and using a smaller branch to replace the main leader.

Agree that you'll need to build branches with whatever the tree gives you but trying for a structure similar to the second will give you more options as the tree ages.
