Ebbingei is a semi-dwarf compared to pungens. The upper surface on the leaves is a very dark green with s very pale "silvery" lower surface. Pungens has much paler gray-green upper surfaces and is faster growing.

I think that the punguns has thorns and drop its leaves in fall if im correct.
Growth and leaves and fruits are similar but you could just defoliate the ebbingei in winter if you want to see the structure better at least i know some one who does that without problems

I have a bunch of these as privacy hedge, The new growth looks normal to me, and they are very vigorous plants. They will climb 40 feet up into a tree in no time. They are evergreen here in Georgia zone 8b.
