    Pinus virginiana, Scrub Pine Yamadori

I’m glad you’re giving this species a shot. I’ve started to really like Virginia pines and collected last month. I need to post a photo. I think your first one shows the most promise, as I can tell it’s already beginning to show signs of mature bark at the base. I don’t know what the nebari...

    If you were 37 ...

Re-activating this threat: I was 37 when you posted this thread. I’d still plant my favorite species: Japanese White Pine, Japanese Red Pine, Korean Hornbeam, (American) Red Spruce, pitch pine, and a few more others that don’t come to mind atm. I’ve actually tried growing some of these from...

    Lorax7 JWP #1 progression

Any update on this one? It looks like the graft (if there is one) is so low it’s almost hidden.

Collecting native pines in New Jersey

Correction: I have experience collecting a red spruce in Sept and a pitch pine in late August years ago, both of which responded very well. I’ve been lucky with the recent weather here in northern VA—warm days with occasional rain. I’ll let you guys know if it doesn’t make it but so far with...

Collecting native pines in New Jersey

So, I ended up collecting a small VA pine seedling as an experiment last weekend. I’ve collected a red spruce in last Sept and a pitch pine in last August, so I felt confident that if I could find enough feeder roots near the trunk that it would do fine. I’ve been obsessively reading about how...

Collecting native pines in New Jersey

Do you have any collection tips for specifically Virginia pine? I have my eye on one that’s growing in a humus-rich soil and looks fairly old. I’d like to collect next spring.

    Shortleaf pine

Wow what a base! Where did you collect it?

    Chinese red pine from seed

Any updates? I’d be interested to see how they’ve been developing and if you can apply single or double flush pine bonsai techniques to them.

    Yamadori shortleaf pine

There’s a few Shortleaf pine threads here I recommend following. I’m also trying to learn about them to see whether I should try to grow them. Are you in the southeast?

    Shortleaf pine

Good to know. I live in zone 7b but have very limited outdoor space for overwintering trees other than placing against the back of my house. I’ve opted to only grow trees that need minimal winter protection. Do you think shortleaf pines as bonsai will require more protection than JBP?

    Shortleaf pine

Interesting. Even though Shortleaf pines are native to MO, it’s obvious a big state. Do shortleaf pines grow near STL? I have many colleagues from there and have heard my share about how brutal the winters can get. I think you’re roughly the same latitude as DC but at least 1 or 2 hardiness...

Collecting native pines in New Jersey

That makes sense regarding the increased watering needs reflecting a less than ideal time for collection. I’ve lately been eyeing an old looking shortleaf pine in a nearby forest that has lots of feeder roots closer to the trunk that I’d like to collect. I know spring is the safest time to...

    Young JRP in development

@lieuz Wow, thanks for this suggestion and the thought you’ve put into it! I wasn’t getting any replies to my update for a while, and was hoping someone would chime in. I’m thinking a lot about where I want to take this tree. Ideally, I would’ve loved to be able to keep the apex by bringing it...

    Shortleaf pine

Any more updates from folks growing this species in areas with cold winters? I’m considering collecting one next spring and want to assess how winter hardy they are.

    Repotting advice JWP

I should have mentioned this before, but I think the pot size is way more in line with the size of the tree and makes it the composition more cohesive. I also wouldn’t have thought to use a cream-colored pot for a pine, but for a white pine, especially those with lighter foliage, it works. Well...
