    Rescue Blau

I cleaned up this little guy.. I have an idea for where to go next, but saved some cutback for later when it has recovered.

What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

    Shimpaku seasonal activities?

I did the upper branches first on the shimpaku. And might take a little off the bottom on the blue rug. The cascade branches are to the back on the rug.. although the back is usually the front so that the cascade branches can get some sun there. I am not crazy about the big cascade branch. It...

    Shimpaku seasonal activities?

I repotted the one on the right this past spring and recently did some clean up pruning. I started by thinning branches that had back buds, but figured I’d let some more sun in by thinning out the top section over the past couple weeks. I was wondering if I should be saving the cutbacks until...

    Yankadori elm 2006ish

This “yankadori” (technical term for material removed from parking tie or similar circumstance) was one of my first bonsai when I moved to the DC area. I believe it is Siberian elm, could be American. It is courser than my other “volunteer” elms. When it was young I tourniqueted the roots...

Eastern Hemlock - Increasingly Low Vigor

Just to throw another idea out there, could you put it in the ground a little more upright for recovery? Check for ants too. I had a nursery E hemlock that was real weak and I went to repot in the ground and it was crawling with ants. Oops. Not sure if it made it because I moved.

    Shimpaku design help

From my perspective, are two formidable trunks there. What if you jinned branches in between the two trunks, but kept them both? Sort of like a mother daughter design, but more like husband, wife. Not a typical style but I bet you could make the design dance or turn one into more of a cascade...

How long has it been in there?

Eastern Hemlock - Increasingly Low Vigor

Does that look like some sort of canker, or are those dead buds and pollen cones?Maybe treat with some 3-1 systemic? Counter to conventional perhaps, but I would give it more sun and a lot of organic fertilizer as well as a weak chem fertilizer to try and break the spiral. I brought a few...

    Cork or peely bark JBP?

What sort of pot styles should I target for this tree? I know it is early in development and the masculinity could evolve. But I thought this tree was going to be less feminine than it feels, if that makes sense. When I go to Brazil this summer I should have the opportunity to pick up some...

‘Kishu’ Juniper from National Arboretum workshop 2011

I’m in Myrtle Beach. Thank you for the leads on some local nuts. Florence is only 1.5 hours away. The tree could make a nice informal upright, and may eventually go that way. But, I just put into a larger pot, so I may try to beef it up more for a few more years, while trying to keep the...

‘Kishu’ Juniper from National Arboretum workshop 2011

Thank you! I believe it will remain cascade in the same general form that it has now. The previous, freshly wired form makes it most apparent: https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/%E2%80%98kishu%E2%80%99-juniper-from-national-arboretum-workshop-2011.12098/post-1093234 No doubt it is more than a...
