People normally work bottom up. Work the root first as thats the harvest to fix if theres issues with it down the road.

Hmm ports are edible. The entire plant is soft including the trunk. If a cat, or dog decides to take a nibble, the whole plant might disappear lol Just a thought

What part of town are you in @namnhi? I'm next to Spring and coldest it predicted to get is next Tuesday night at 28 with possible snow! And monday night at 30. This is pretty much exactly the same as the cold that just passed.

Same here. When I lived in Philly, nurseries have these bark chip soil conditioner that's like $13 a giant bag. Can't find them here in texas. Would coco chore work? Or do they break down or compact too quick?

Question, if almost the entire if not the entire supporting root system are somewhere far out there, why do half ground layer? Why not try a proper ground layer? I mean pseudo ground layer since tree would not be girdle...

There was someone planning the same thing as you last year, but housing these rare newts. I don't believe that person ever updated if they even started the project. Give this a try and see what could be made of it. But please, do update here with pics. We all can learn a thing or two.
