Here are a few photos of the trees that I've unwired and potted already this season, and their new leaves or buds. I have to say that for me, the greenhouse is worth every penny and sweaty day I spent on it. Not only do I have peace of mind for overwintering, but I can do plants outside my immediate zone by a couple tics. This makes me happy, but being able to get a head start on the season with maples and early risers is really advantageous with the shorter seasons we have here.
Just a thought, maybe instead of another tree next time.... build a greenhouse!

More photos, the next to last one is a hackberry in a pot I got on this forum from pwk5017, looks great in it's new pot, thanks PWK!
The last one is a saunders dwarf boxwood that has a nice base but leggy branching. Needs to be worked back, has a decent start going. I have sort of lost my interest in this tree, so would like to find someone that wants it. Not looking for a ton of $$, if anyone is interested, PM me.

Nothing better in this world, than working on trees...

Even my least favorite job, removing wire (which I did alllll day long) is a happy time!

I want a greenhouse so bad, so that I can overwinter my trees easier and have slightly less hardy trees in my area. Do you have a heater in it? I'd love to see pics of the greenhouse, you may have posted this already I'll look for the thread.

I'm curious about heating, too. I can winter almost everything in my garage but would like to branch out to things that need a slightly warmer dormancy.

Yes there is a small heater, just to keep it above 28 or so, the mainstay is the heat mats that keep the pots from freezing, so I get root growth all winter. Also allows me to keep 2 zones, one on heat mats set higher, and one that allows just above freezing.

I'm sure I have a thread, I'll find it and link.

Yup Don, like gangbusters! This will be a grow year for it, I'm letting a lot of my trees have the year to do nothing but put on growth.

Here is a link to the greenhouse thread. The trick is to use a translucent panel instead of glass or triple wall, so you don't get heat buildup in the winter. Or to do a shade cover during the winter. Keeping it cold is the largest issue. But with a fan and auto vent system, it's not too bad. Since there is only one end that is big glass, I do use grow lights during this time of year for when it's too cold to set them out but they have leaves and need light.
Works well for me, I get a month on each end of the season, and I never worry about the weather... only thing I don't have is backup if the electric goes out. Maybe next year, been lucky so far.

Too cold is usually not the issue; too hot is. Keeping the greenhouse cool can be a challenge. Intake shutters, exhaust fans, open doors, opaque sheeting, etc. etc. etc.....

My preference for overwintering trees is in a cold, dark building. Only then can you control, for the most part, dormancy.

I guess it all depends on which variety if tree you wish to have. A tree not zoned to you...that needs to be dormant...and such but your zone is much to cold for it. For me...that is making a list to see how many trees fit into that classification to justify the expense. When there are amazing trees to my zone.

As well as...my neighbor enlightened me, as to why she got rid of her green house a few years back. Not only do you have to keep temps at a designated temperate...but also, allow for ice storms and such that take out our power...so does one wish to also deal with a generator. Because fact is...one would need that as well in our area to keep a green house properly. (We have our home partially wired to a generator...keeps the snake warm...and our freezer meat frozen and such. And we can live comfortably with the generator.) But...to mess with not one but two generators...during an ice storm. Many factors to view...for ones own situation. And plan appropriately. My neighbor really had me seeing the complications that can arise that she wasn't willing to deal with any longer. And the green house took up yard space...so the green house was sold.

What about your satzuki's? Seems like the combo of needing light and ~40°F dormancy plus frost protection makes my place for everything else not ideal. I thought I could install a T5 fluorescent in the garage for the foliage and there would be no threat of frost but I still wasn't sure if it would be warm enough.

They over-winter perfectly in an unheated attached garage. They don't need light or 40 degrees.

Very nice Judy! Is that your new tag? "Queen of the nuts"?
