Hey anybody seen the Tide commercial where this couple has a start up (that's not doing well)? It must be a mail order bonsai company, there are all these junis in pots sitting all over the office, and the guy is at a laptop with a pic of a juni. Interesting.

I'm trying to look it up on my phone at the moment.... Do you have a link or anything?

I actually saw it on....(gasp).... TV!!! I'm too old school for streaming...

I haven't seen it yet. I think by a link they were talking about a link to it on somewhere like youtube not streaming, because 99% of all commercials can be found on youtube these days. I looked but couldn't find it anywhere myself. I'll keep my eye open for it.

The reason your start up isn't happening is becasue you are selling people dead trees that you keep all over your office and not outside where they belong.

Where and why did this biggest myth of bonsai begin?

Streaming, U-tube, all the same to me...... Add Facebook in there and you have the trifecta!

its called capitalism

The same commercial could be shot in a greenhouse and totally make sense. It reminds me of a commercial a long time ago where athletes were running the wrong way around a track. Whoever is in charge obviously doesn't know much!!

Honestly, I've see worts bonsai for sale. Maybe the are selling so quick they are inside for only a couple days

Funny timing, Valavanis' blog said something about the way to make a million bucks in bonsai is to start with two million bucks!

Doesn't this apply to every hobby though? That's why it's a hobby. I've seen this statement about reef/fish stores, reptiles, bonsai, and pretty much everything else. It's so sad to see people come into a hobby and eventually try and make a buck off it.

I dont think it is sad to make money from a hobby. I would personally never sale any of my bonsai, but I feel that it is rewarding to make money from a hobby, and it helps with income for some people. Like the money is appreciation for your effort. The moment you turn your hobby into a business, then you have lost all the fun out of the hobby. But I dont see anything wrong with whatever decision one makes.

it's odd, every professional I've ever seen "working" was seemingly enjoying every minute of it. They were rockstars in a wading pool of admiration. So many people on this forum, I suspect, would love to make a business of bonsai.

If it paid.

I used to turn wood making bowls, vases, pens, etc. and love it so much, there are days I will be turning overnight until 4am only to wake up at 5:30am to go to work. I would do that even when it is freezing cold at winter (my work area is at my covered porch at the back w/ 2 open sides).

Then I got good enough, I started receiving orders for my pens. I was making good money but the hobby I love became WORK and it went all downhill from then. When I developed wood allergy (eczema), I am almost happy to have a way out (excuse). Sad, since I really loved doing it before. :(

I think there is a big difference between "professionals" and trying to make money from your hobby. I wonder if you saw the professionals when they were paying bills, and not working on trees, if they would look as happy? From what I have been told and seen...being a bonsai professional is very hard work for little money...I think Bill V is an excellent example...works his butt off...is diversified in many areas, mag, travel, pins, conventions, workshops and demos...and he will tell you that is has not been an easy road!

Although I sell a few trees, I constantly fight the urge, the last thing I want to do is ruin the joy of my hobby by making it a business. I did that with aquariums and it took years for the joy to come back!

just sayin:)
