Dallas Bonsai Garden Contest

I agree with october, I feel like some people are making it out to be more competitive that it should be. It's not the bonsai Olympics, it's an informal contest on an internet forum for bragging rights and a bag of akadama, or whatever else DBG has in store. The point should be to have fun and enjoy seeing what other people come up with.

If anything it would be contests like this that involve low-cost, basic stock that will get beginners to actually get a tree and start learning bonsai instead of lurking on forums and twisting wire around houseplants. Trying to make it into the greatest bonsai show on earth by overcomplicating things will probably scare off some people that might otherwise have participated.

I think we all have to take a deep breath and sit back as Dallas Bonsai and the Nutt define the parameters of this contest.

You mean I can't wrap some 5mm wire around a tomato plant, stick it in some well draining soil, put it in a small pot and not expect to win....something:p

I hope that it does, it's the most positive thing to happen around here in some time.

Hey everyone, sorry for not updating this in so long.

The whole tree contest fizzled and died, and I apologize for that. I really, personally, didn't like the idea of people spending $30 to enter a contest, and put in a ton of work. I would rather we do some quick and fun contests that don't require any investment.

Since we have left everyone hanging, I think the best thing to do is start with something simple with no investment required.

I've got a $100 gift card and a couple $20 gift cards for the store. Would anyone be opposed to a photo contest? I'd like to see something done where photography is less relevant, maybe do a contest where people take trees they have been neglecting and we judge who has done the best job of breathing new life into their trees?

I'm not opposed to a photo contest, but would prefer a different guideline.

What about (here's my 2 cents off the top of my head!) something like creating an accent from local collecting? Honor code: No purchasing allowed (besides containers?). Before and after pics required (before collection). I'm sure there's something desirable that everyone could gather locally and given a little bit of time to perhaps keep it alive .

I think the photo competition could be good, although at this point of the year, I've already done pretty much all the re-working already, as we head into the heat of the summer.

I think that it is pretty much the Worst time of the year to collect anything. So I don't think that that idea is a good one for now.

fun, quick , cheap and easy? How about a before and after topdress challenge? Bet everyone can find some moss or topdressing of choice..

I have to say, I like the original idea for this contest the best. I realize that it is not the best time of year to style some trees. However, even making this just for fun with no prizes, I really think it should be kept, in some way, about the trees. You could post before and after pics from your files over the years or, as mentioned, returning a neglected tree to glory.

I like Robs' suggestion. I'm sure most people would have something of a before and after photo of a few of their trees, even if it goes back quite a few years. As stated this isn't the best time of year to do a contest that was mentioned at the beginning of this thread, but a photo contest would be perfect for this time.

This thread kinda turned out to be much to do about nothing...
Kinda reminds me of the Grizwals Las Vegas vacation.....
Maybe we can play guess what number I am thinking??

I believe the saying is ..."Poop or get off the pot." Not sure why an organization asks the participants to figure this out for them. Make a decision what you are going to do, tell us and people can participate or not.

Dallas Bonsai, I buy all my pine bark from you. I love it! But the longer this goes on, it just seems like incompetence.

I take it back... we can't play pick a number, cause we already did that...
That's how the bags of soil were won.
Maybe we could play muisical chairs ???

I agree, designing a bonsai is far more interesting and fun for me than any other activity a contest like this could come up with. Besides; it kind of shows the metal, or lack of same, of some of the people that offer all of these suggestions on doing trees. Personally I don't care what kind of award is being offered, or none at all, all I really care about is having a reason to do another bonsai.

In defense of Dallas Bonsai: I know that there is one person in particular who is being highly critical for where this discussion has taken this turn. Well Whoop-de-doo: This is the first time since I have been on this site that the subject of a contest has come up. I would still like to see it happen but that does not necessarily mean that Dallas Bonsai should be made to eat crow or cow pie. Which also brings up another issue; it does not have to be done with or without Dallas Bonsai or anyone else for that matter. All we need to do is decide to do it and figure out a way to pull it off fairly.
