I want to hear more arguments ..Bonsai Humor Thread No. 2

Now THIS is an argument I can get behind! I love windswept trees - because they are so hard to do convincingly!

If done right, windswept can be really cool. I particularly like when a trunk is leaning into the wind, as opposed to looking like the whole tree is falling over. Leaning into the wind brings a sense of drama, or that the tree is in the act of fighting against the wind.

As opposed to this:

The top pic isn't leaning into the wind, but the foliage gives a sense of motion, which is super cool to me. It's really well done, as it looks like a picture of a tree in the middle of a big storm.

Some people in bonsai are way too arrogant . Even the younger guys my age , there seems to still be arrogance and a false sense of superiority. Some people on here don’t even recognize or respect a persons apprenticeship and progression just because it’s not with someone popular on social media or they didn’t go to Japan for 4 years .. there I said it . I can name plenty of people in bonsai that have not gotten formal apprenticeship in Japan. But to think that someone has a tremendous opportunity to not have to relocate and quit their career is somewhat lesser in their eyes / teachers eyes because they can only apprentice Fridays and weekend disgusts me . I know who you are

Probably only 20% worry about who has credentials like that, except those who try to be credentialed for WHATEVER reason, just different reasons for different types - right? From a distance, it just looks like those concerned have different goals/ agendas and they are still valid.

Well im speaking from my own experience that I have received that critique about my bonsai apprenticeship and that I somehow am lesser . And it’s not fair to someone that can’t up and quit their career and I am lucky to live near a professional who offers and fits my life style . I should the ashamed of it and some stick up their ass people in bonsai look down upon that

Without naming people, the most adoration you will get as an artist is from these who are in a similar situation or members here, or people who don't even do bonsai. Respect from peers is probably harder, because unspoken rules get developed in a field that is akin to dog breeding, or something similar. There will always be talk of pedigree amongst those with higher ones.
Doesn't mean it's wrong, it's just there in every field that attracts a pecking order. There HAS to be some degree of awkwardness when they get to a certain point and realize they have to choose circles. Feel bad for them for that. They gave up some liberty to go tthere.

I've chopped it down, pruned away most of the roots and put it in too-small of a pot. Why doesn't it grow??!!! Uuuhhhhhhhh..................never mind. 🤪 Have you ever thought of taking up knitting as a hobby?

It's not growing because you need to put it inside by a direct sunlight window.

The climate control of a house allows the tree to recover like a spa day would do for us. Less stress and don't have to deal with the environment. Make sure to mist it every couple hours to really hydrate the leaves and bark. Since you cut all the roots away, it needs to absorb the moisture through the pores. Once the roots regrow, consider misting but not watering the soil. If moss starts growing then you are misting too often.

Also the glass magnifies the light so the tree gets more concentration of it per leaf. Like going to an all you can eat buffet.

Once it recovers and grows, might as well keep it inside. Trees love to live a pampered life.

Please don't stop answering questions from us newbs.......even if it's just one of us that listens, it's well worth it and appreciated

Respect.
Please stop asking stupid questions and making stupid mistakes before you study previous posts. Ask first, then make honest mistakes.

1. A lot of bonsai that people swoon over look like unnatural abominations to me. Many old Japanese bonsai fit this bill for me. 🫤
Perfectly perfect and accurate statement. No argument here.😁

Bonsai Mirai is a bonsai snob cult and Ryan Neil is a cult leader. All members give their tithings so their dear leader can build a compound that he also charges them to enter. Only the richest best can go study at the compound. Then they go forth into their clubs to bully people who have been doing bonsai for 40 years for not speaking in the Mirai terminology.

All cult members are required to disparage Nigel Saunders and Bonsai Zone thrice annually.

His most devout followers will write personal attacks about anyone speaking ill of their lord
🤣🤣🤣

Bonsai is NOT art. It is craft. Trees are NOT material They are living things, trees.
I fully disagree re. the art statement. With this argument, painting is also not an artform but just craft. It is a matter of putting paint on canvas in a pleasing manner.
Maybe 95% of bonsai is just cookie cutter. But then you run into work done by someone that just blows away all curtains and imagination is unleashed. That is way beyond mere "wiring and pruning".

Pretty accurate. A man in our club has gone to 3 of the (I believe) weeklong workshops at Mirai. He is HOOKED. He bought a 1 foot length of evidently special bamboo to make chopsticks for $30.00. Last time, he came back with a mame ficus for $750. A MAME for $750!!!

How good was the ficus? 😁 I’m always careful about criticism of people spending money on bonsai. I have had the neighbors asked with wide eyes “HOW MUCH did you pay for THAT ugly dead shrub? “
It WAS pretty good, but how good can something 3" tall be. I've been told 6" is pretty good. 🤣
